Dist:0.7km<br/>Looking N.W., I am just clipping the corner of the square SJ4375 on this road. Only the nearest 20m is in the square. [ The overhead pipe in the distance is about 75m away ]. Over the grass embankment on the left is the River Gowy, but although I climbed up on the bank to take another photo, the River itself is in the next square SJ4275. I shall enter that photo as a supplemental for SJ4275.

Dist:0.9km<br/>An approximate grid reference. The site contained three of these American built horizontal single cylinder steam engines driving horizontal pumps. This or a similar machine is in store at Astley Green Colliery.

Dist:1.0km<br/>Grid reference is still very approximate. If anybody knows better I would be delighted. Worthington Simplex steam pump. Removed for preservation but subsequently scrapped. All this kit was in the open.

Dist:1.0km<br/>Grid ref is approximate as this was a large site and has been long cleared. The picture shows the Dubs plant. This was basically all American kit with Worthington steam pumps and Erie-Ball rotative steam engines. Other areas had long rows of large steam pumps and there was a big power house with turbo-alternator sets and no working lights. This might be the first geograph inside an oil refinery.

Dist:1.2km south<br/>The cycle-path links the A5117 with the Shropshire Union Canal. It was a shame that somebody has decided to offload their household items onto the path. Just in view, beyond the initial pile, there is a small pile of rubbish that blocks the path completely. Rather Ironically, the land to the left of the path is managed by the Environment Agency.

Dist:1.2km southeast<br/>Memories of the 1960s come flooding back. Pre-motorway, this was the main highway from industrial Lancashire to the North Wales seaside. Slow moving traffic with an all-pervasive refinery odour remained part of the delights of travel before the M56's final westward extension as late as 1981, though much of the holiday traffic had discovered the delights of locations even more exotic than Wales by then.
