Dist:0.3km<br/>From the Linby Trail looking east to one of those 'disguised as a tree' masts, no doubt because Linby is always in the running for best kept village. Beyond the mast is the embankment which once carried the Great Central Railway main line between Sheffield and Nottingham.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The cross was probably erected in 1663. The base and shaft are older, probably Medieval. From its base flows one of the Linby Docks, restored in 1990 (see [[1649950]]). The cross is thought to mark the western boundary of Sherwood Forest.

Dist:0.4km<br/>A Trentbarton bus on route 141 passes through Linby village on its way from Sutton in Ashfield to Nottingham. Surprisingly, given the enormous upheavals in Trentbarton's network, the 141 uses the same number and follows essentially the same route as it has done for over 30 years (although now cut back from Clay Cross to Sutton). The K6 telephone box is no longer in use as such but had been wired up with an impressive display of Christmas fairy lights.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Although it is a former mining village - the pit was at the western end - Linby has always had a rural feel to it. The name Linby may be a corruption of Leen (derived from the River Leen) or Lind (a word of Viking origin meaning lime trees).
