Taken from somewhat undulating Gastrells School playing fields looking due west. This ridge is very popular with paragliders, hangliders, gliders and model gliders, can get a bit busy up there!

Dist:0.2km<br/>This is looking to the north-west. On the far horizon is the Forest of Dean part of Gloucestershire just above the River Severn. The hill in the middle is, I think, Doverow Hill, just east of Stonehouse.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This is a view to the south-west along the western shoulder of the common. There are a few scattered properties on the edges of the common one of which is visible in the distance at SO84630354.

Dist:0.5km<br/>There are several of these depressions in this part of the Common. They aren't marked on the maps and I don't know what they are or how they came to exist. The common itself it 'unimproved limestone grassland' which may provide a clue. On the skyline is Rodborough Fort http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/801624

Dist:0.5km<br/>I read that the Common is home to 13 species of orchids. My handy reference book the Jeremy Clarkson book of wild flowers identifies this as a Fragrant Orchid (Gymnadenia conopsea).

Dist:0.6km<br/>This image shows another of the depressions or pits in the surface of the common. They are not marked on the maps so there is no obvious clue to their origins. Whatever they may be this one is possibly being used for some bizarre Cotswold ritual involving the placing of small stones to form letters and numbers. Some form of religion that communicates in textspeak? In the centre of the image is a pictogram that may well be some form of fertility symbol.

Dist:0.6km<br/>Rodborough Common with its neighbour Minchinhampton Common comprises 350 hectares of ancient grassland just south of Stroud. It is managed by the National Trust and the commons support a diversity of flora and wildlife species. There are some glorious views from up here and it is very accessible.
