Dist:0.3km<br/>This was Sunnybank Mill, owned by C. and J. Hirst. The road which is bridged over by the building is the bottom end of Grove Street: and the road coming down from the left at the extreme left end of the mill is Benn Lane. It appears that the mill was listed, but the arched part collapsed spontaneously so the whole structure was demolished. I am indebted to Chris Allen for this information.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Very much a common scene 30 years ago in the Colne Valley but the mills are now silent and being demolished or converted to apartments. The latter fate has befallen this complex although it was still active when I took its picture on a sunny Sunday morning.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This picture is slightly earlier than Dr Neil Clifton's [[645424]] and shows the mill building on the right before demolition was too far advanced. The mill building across the road was listed and retained but mysteriously collapsed one morning and was subsequently swept away. It was the demolition of Sunnybank Mills that spurred Jack Ramsay to write his excellent book "Made in Huddersfield". I took several shots on this day and will be posting more.

Dist:0.4km<br/>This former woollen mill complex has been converted to apartments. The chimney is of unusual design and is next to a projecting engine house. The aerial photo now shows the mill block to the right to be 'Quarry Bank Mill' but this name appears to be 'made up'. The references all refer to Parkwood Mills (or New Mill).

Dist:0.4km<br/>This road was made along the hillside in the19C and lined with terrace houses for the workers in the nearby mills. Today only a few blocks remain, like the back-to-backs on the right, and terraces of three-storey town houses have been built instead. Longwood Church is in the distance.

Dist:0.4km<br/>This photograph overlaps the previous one, but shows the front of the engine-house with its characteristic tall arched window. Two branches of Longwood Brook have been exposed, and perhaps, hopefully, they will be landscaped in a garden.
