Dist:0.2km north<br/>Limehouse Cut is hardly one of England's more popular canals, so it was fortunate that a small cruiser was passing under this bridge just as I took the photograph. This is looking northeast. Bow Common Lane is the name of the road to the left of the bridge, while at the right it changes its name to Upper North Street. It is not a classified road, but does carry a bus route - the 309 from Bethnal Green to Canning Town. It is one of those roads beloved of cabbies and white-van men who know 'all the dodges'.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>In former years, London's urban canals had many small docks where one or two boats could be moored off the main route while loading or unloading took place. Many of these have disappeared, but their successors are private side moorings available to nearby residents where a few narrow boats can be kept.

Dist:0.3km north<br/>The Limehouse Cut was built to provide a navigable short-cut from the River Thames at Limehouse Basin north-east to the River Lee Navigation at Bromley-by-Bow, thus avoiding the long meandering curves of the lower reaches of the River Lee at Bow Creek, and the long bend in the River Thames around the Isle of Dogs. It was authorised by the River Lee Act of 1766, and completed in 1770 so it is effectively the oldest canal in London. This view was taken from the Morris Road bridge looking in the direction of Limehouse. The towpath on the left forms a section of the Lea Valley Walk. It is also shown on the Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 scale maps as a series of solid light brown circles, indicating an off road cycle route.

Dist:0.3km north<br/>On the corner of Devons Road and Gale Street the garages at the rear of Mollis House lead towards Furze Green. About a mile further south lies the Canary Wharf development.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>This is the Fawe Street frontage of the former factory on its south side. Spratt's Patent Limited was the formal name of the company.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>Spratts built their factory in Poplar, backing onto [[934886]], in 1899. The proximity to the canalized cut allowed fish heads to be brought in directly from the docks for processing into pet food. This is the main factory entrance in Morris Road. Judging by the fact that only the T and the S remain out of the Spratts name the chimney at the right must have been considerably taller at one time! The factory has now been converted into flats.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>An example of the post-war housing that replaced the bomb-damaged, jerry-built terraced streets which attracted the reputation historically of slums. Arthur Morrison, author of Child of the Jago, was born nearby and wrote about the desperate lives of the East End poor. See http://www.ferdinando.org.uk/achildof.htm Most of the streets around here were called after the surnames and first names of members of the families who originally owned the land: Duff, Grundy, Wade and so on.
