Dist:0.2km<br/>Canal and railway come close together here on the eastern outskirts of Ilkeston. The railway is used by passenger services between Nottingham and Sheffield as well as many freight trains. The canal runs from the River Trent at Trentlock northwards to the basin at Langley Mill; originally built primarily as an outlet for coal mined in the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border area, it is now used exclusively for leisure boating. Not that there was any sign of any boats moving on this cold New Year's Day, however.

It's a mild day with broken cloud and is almost spring-like. Compare with [[98532]] from just a few days ago when we were gripped in the depths of winter.

Dist:0.5km<br/>View north from the footbridge, which has the long ramps to accommodate bridleway traffic (although I think it would be fun to try it with a horse). The Nottingham Canal runs behind the hedge up on the right and then behind the hill. Ilkeston Junction is no longer a railway junction or a station, but was situated near the bridge in the distance. The line here forms the boundary between Nottinghamshire on the right and Derbyshire on the left.

Dist:0.5km<br/>Leaving Cossall at the end of Mill Lane, this track crosses the Nottingham Canal just behind the viewpoint. It runs downhill towards the mainline railway, crossing it via the green bridge visible through the trees.
