Lanercost Priory close by Hadrians Wall. The church is intact but the Priory a ruin under the protection of English Heritage. Well worth a visit.

Dist:0.2km<br/>This is one of the priory churches that were partly saved by being used by the local population as their parish church. As usual it is the nave that has survived. The choir and chancel were the monk's domain, and are ruined. The church is dedicated to St Mary Magdalene, and her statue, made in c.1250-75 according to Nikolaus Pevsner, is high up in the west gable over three very tall windows and this grand arcading and archway with four orders of columns.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Lanercost priory from the graveyard. Impressive "army" of sizeable gravestones and interesting lack of any sentimentality - "Such-and-such" died on March 15 1907 also "So-and-so" died on July 25 1921. Usually no more than that unless also accompanied by a place name.

Dist:0.2km<br/>This is set in the wall of the buildings next to the priory itself and must have come from Hadrian's Wall just to the north. You may have to stand on your head to read it though (this photo has been inverted 180 degrees). It says: 'LEG VI V PIA FID' which translates as 'Legion Six Victrix made this'.
