Dist:0.3km north<br/>There has been much change over the years to the waterways and railways in this area. Originally, the River Aire ran to the south of Knostrop Cut, not the north, so the Navigation had to lock into the river and then out again by Thwaite Locks, (which no longer exist). Then for a while the river had both old and new channels, but the old southerly channel parallel to Knostrop Cut was filled in and built over. The railway viaduct piers belong to the Great Northern Railway Hunslet branch, which was still in use, although not for passengers, until after WWII.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>This shot includes a waterwheel (blurred by motion), jaw crusher, edge runner grinding pan and a reciprocating water/slurry pump. This mill is very atmospheric and the guided tours are excellent.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>This 1947 crane was removed when the site closed and was taken to Stoke on Trent where it languished in a council yard. When Thwaite Mills were restored it was repatriated, restored and returned to steam. One of very few engines to have been removed and made a comeback. The power station in the background is history.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>My own rather flat version. The 1947 Butters Brothers steam Derrick crane was actually in steam although rather inactive in this view. The mills were latterly putty and whiting mills and the range of kit is most impressive. I was present at a very early meeting to discuss the preservation of this site when the Yorkshire Branch of the Northern Mill Engine Society was one of the interested parties. Indeed the NMES stored engine parts here for a while (I was on a lorry delivering some of them) but were eventually forced to relocate. Mill engines really didn't fit in here conceptually, although it had originally been hoped to include a museum of mill engines on site. If any geographers can add anything to the above account I would be interested.

Thwaite Mills is a working water-powered mill and museum situated between the River Aire and the Aire and Calder Navigation.
