Looking south over the weir. The river approaches from the right of this picture, and turns right to go down the weir. To the left, out of the picture, is the sluice gate that leads into the goit (a man made channel taking water to a mill).

A goit is a man-made channel, which carries water from a river to drive a mill further down stream. This picture was taken from the platform above the sluice gates where the goit starts by the weir at Kirkstall Abbey.

This is the sluice gate at the entrance to the goit (millrace) which leaves the River Aire at the weir by Kirkstall Abbey. The weir is out of the picture at the right. The small building presumably houses the controls for the sluice gate.

The occupants of the adjoining houses seem to have been using the canal as a means of ridding themselves of unwanted items. I hope they are all very happy wallowing in the mess they have made of this area.

On the north side of the railway line, between the station and Queenswood Drive
