This pub stands in a prominent position on Little Hallam Hill between Ilkeston and Kirk Hallam. Compare this view with a similar one taken five years earlier [[16547]] - sadly the 'Kimberley Ales' sign, once ubiquitous in this area, has gone.

The Bulls Head on Little Hallam Hill is thought to be one of the oldest pubs in the area and its appearance has changed little over the years.

Looking up Little Hallam Hill. There used to be a railway bridge across the road at this point carrying the Great Northern Railway branch from Ilkeston to the Stanton Ironworks.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Originally a mineral railway line, the Nutbrook Trail now passes under the bridge. Note that a separate pedestrian bridge has been added because of the narrowness of the carriageway.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This was originally part of the water supply for the town of Ilkeston. It later became an area known as The Beauty Spot, where boats could be hired, and the local youth could parade themselves. The beauty has rather disappeared today.

Dist:0.3km<br/>At the old railway bridge at Ladywood Road. As can be seen, The Nutbrook Trail is part of Sustrans route 67. I like the use of slightly unorthodox materials, old railway sleepers, to create a notice that is in harmony with its surroundings and decently robust.

Dist:0.4km<br/>At the top of the rise, Ladywood Road, is the ancient village of Kirk Hallam, which in the 1950s became the focus of an extensive housing development, initially to provide housing largely for the nearby Stanton ironworks, who contributed to the construction. This was the southern part of the development - turn left at the cross roads. A right turn takes you into the later, 1960s/70s development which was privately developed.
