Dist:0.3km<br/>Ayrshire's rolling farmland, created by glacial deposits, viewed near Martnaham Mains on a bright February afternoon. The small hills are drumlins, deposited by the ice sheet. Martnaham Loch, lying in adjacent squares, is a kettle lake which was formed from a large block of melting ice at the end of the last Ice Age.

Dist:1.0km<br/>Although overgrown, the castle remains still show the layout of a causeway leading to a building with 3 main rooms. It is located on the south bank, on a promontory which may well have been an island when the castle was built.

Dist:1.0km northwest<br/>The loch level was high on this visit, after a long period of wet weather in south-west Scotland. Under drier conditions, it would be easy to cross here at the narrowest part of the loch. Martnaham is a kettle lake, created towards the end of the last Ice Age.
