The post office has been closed, the slot on the post box has been welded up and the telephone box is looking decidedly sickly. Never mind, about 30 yards to the right a sign said "To Jack and Jill Hill," having read Phil's comments in [[[109806]]] I followed the directions to [[[862076]]]

The design of the lychgate symbolizes the Trinity and it was designed in 1900 by Sir Edwin Lutyens (29 March 1869 – 1 January 1944) for the Hylton family. Many churches have a lych gate built over the main entrance to the enclosed area round the church. The name, also spelt lich or lytch, is from the Anglo Saxon 'lich' meaning corpse. The gate marks the division between consecrated and unconsecrated ground, where the bearers sheltered with the coffin, waiting for the clergyman to lead the procession before the burial. The original lych gates had seats, a lych cross and a lych stone - a slab on which the coffin rested.

Dist:0.1km<br/>A view looking west along the B3139 at Kilmersdon Hill. The hillside behind the old tollhouse is reputedly the hill referred to in the famous nursery rhyme about Jack and Jill. The "Jack and Jill Hill", is, in fact a footpath leading from Ames Lane, Kilmersdon (ST695525) up to the Kilmersdon Primary School (ST693526) at the end of School Lane. There are stone markers on the way up the hill each one depicting a line from the nursery rhyme. The restored well head is located in the school grounds. This was Kilmersdon's Millennium Project.
