Elmsleigh, a residential area between St Blazey and Tywardreath was built in Kilhallon Woods. It is a mix of housing styles on intimate streets and narrow country lanes.

Dist:0.2km<br/>If you take a car along the road over this bridge you would probably not even know there was a bridge here, but, as a roadside plaque explains, this bridge has a lot of history. Although this place is well inland now, in the 14th century the lower Luxulyan river was a tidal estuary and this was a stream emptying into it. It was around then that a monk from Tywardreath Priory drowned while trying to cross here on horseback. The monks responded by building a bridge. That bridge was superseded by a bridge built of granite slabs which survived until 1992 when it was replaced by the current anonymous structure due to fears that the increasing weight of traffic would break the old bridge.

It is typical of river valleys, the surroundings of mires and raised bog, the transition zones between open water and drier ground, and, in this case, flooded river estuaries where the water table is high. Alder, birches and willows are the characteristic trees found in this type of habitat, as they are able to extract oxygen from the water saturated habitat. Wet woodland is a disappearing habitat due to land drainage for farming and there are only 50-70000 ha of this diverse habitat left in Britain. This area at Par Pond is important for the diverse wildlife supported including otters, numerous species of ducks, and grass snakes. The most common flowering plant in this area is the yellow flag iris which covers the low lying ground in a carpet of yellow between May and August. Dist:0.2km<br/>The Clay Trails around the St Austell area, first opened in 2005, link old industrual areas around St Austell, the Eden Project and the Wheal Martyn China Clay Mining and Heritage Centre. This photograph shows part of the St Blazey trail, from Eden to Par Beach, that passes through Par and Tywardreath. The surface of the trails are mainly gravel, easy for walking and cycling and most are suitable for horse riding. Trails and pathways can also be used by electric 'mobility' scooters making this interesting area of Cornwall available to a wider group of outdoor enthusiasts.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This open grass land is a pleasant relief after walking through the dense wet woodland at Par Pond. The trees that surround this meadow, mainly alder and willow, are able to absorb oxygen from waterlogged areas and have their roots in water.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Trains transport china clay from St Austell to Fowey Docks where it is exported worldwide. The trains normally have about 32 carriages. China clay has many uses apart from the obvious and can be found in paint, toothpaste and even in some white bread!
