Residential street running south from Finchley Road but previously it was the course of a footpath leading towards Woodbine Cottage on the edge of the Flitcroft estate. Houses here were first built by local developer Edward Jarvis Cave in the 1890s.

This massive building, on the corner of Burrard Road, was built in 1894 as a Congregational church connected with the former Hackney Theological Seminary (later College) next door. It seated over a thousand but congregations dwindled and it closed in 1940. In 1947 it became the Shomei Hadath synagogue but now seems to have been converted into flats and offices.

Cannon Hill runs between Finchley Road and West End Lane, and is lined by imposing mansion flats. They were built in 1898 by Edward Jarvis Cave and designed by architects Edward Boehmer and Percy Gibbs, who were experienced at building mansion flats on the continental model. Initially people were dubious about the health and security of flats such as these but their solid construction and impressive appearance soon made them popular residences for a 'superior class' of person in comfortable circumstances, and with several servants (to make and clean out the fires: note the chimneys!) Sir Adrian Boult, Sir William Coldstream and Nigel Balchin all lived at Marlborough Mansions, along with titled, professional and business types. The flats survived bombing during the war and the dwellers did not move out. My own childhood memory of visiting my aunt in a first floor flat here in the 50s includes the black and white tiled entrance hall, the clanking lift, the huge rooms, the tiny balcony, wall-to-wall carpeting, and an external refuse lift that worked via a pulley outside the scullery window.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>Hackney Theological Seminary (later College) was founded in 1803 in Hoxton and moved in 1887 to this purpose-built brick building with majolica dressings. It was a non-conformist institution co-founded by George Collison, confusingly calling itself Hackney College even when it moved here. It was concerned with the training of ministers for the congregational church, one of which was built beside it 1894. Later it became part of the New College London and now houses the European School of Management.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>All the local dog-owners make a bee-line for the tiny patch of grass that is West End Green - this notice invites them to choose between being a public enemy (illustrated by a pile of turds) or a regular retriever (ditto, daintily bagged-up); there are also prohibitions on bird-feeding (rats!) and on ball games except in designated areas.
