The bridge was erected in 1869 and the design is typical ornamental Victorian. The position of the archway suggests that it originally provided the way under the bridge, and the current embankment and Thames-side path are more recent.

Originally built for the London and South Western Railway under the direction of the engineer W R Galbraith, and opened in 1869, the bridge now carries the District Line trains of London Underground from Gunnersbury station to Kew Gardens station and thence to Richmond, and also Silverlink trains on Network Rail's North London Line between Richmond and Stratford. The bridge is made up of five wrought iron lattice girder spans, each 35 metres long, mounted on cast iron piers.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>Occupation Lane, Kew, the adjoining railway bank, and the sycamore woodland behind the fence are the home of the rare two-lipped door snail (Balea biplicata). The woodland was been set up as a nature reserve when riverside warehouses were demolished to build flats. There is an informative notice board for those who want to visit the site and peer through the railings hoping for a glimpse of this minuscule mollusc.
