Hurst Clough Homepage

Memorial to radical Christian minister Joseph Rayner Stephens, 1805-1879. Having been disciplined by the Wesleyan Connexion in 1834 for advocating separation of Church and State, he resigned and set up his own churches in Stalybridge and Ashton-under-Lyne, and became involved in the Chartist movement and the cause of factory reform. Sentenced to 18 months imprisonment in 1839 after some incendiary speeches.

Dist:0.2km<br/>I remember commuting from here in the early 1980s into Manchester Victoria. The station platforms were exposed to cold northerly and easterly winds blowing in from the hills that rise up all around the town. The prevailing westerlies brought in the rain from Manchester. The waiting shelter and cafe on the platform are more recent welcome additions.[[2628161]]

Dist:0.3km<br/>During the late 1970s and early 1980s, mainline trains from Yorkshire to Manchester were still running into Victoria. The hourly shuttle service between Stockport and Stalybridge, operated by class 104 units such as this one, was an important link for passengers between Yorkshire and Cheshire, making for a quicker journey than having to cross the city centre to Piccadilly.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Built during the cotton famine between 1862 and 1864 it wasn't equipped until 1871. The mill closed in 1960 and is now in multiple occupancy with the main block home to the Stamford Group. The chimney was once one of the tallest in the region and now serves no purpose. The red cladding to the mill's end is striking - but is it aesthetically pleasing?
