Dist:0.4km<br/>Scotland’s first gunpowder mill began here in 1794, powered by water wheels supplied from the Gore Water by four dams and a system of lades. Gunpowder was used in mining and quarrying and also in the Napoleonic Wars. Three men died in an explosion at the mills in September 1827. The mills closed in 1861, but some ruins still remain in the woodland by the Gore Water. The stone abutment on the far bank could be the remains of one of the dams.
