Dist:0.3km north<br/>The architect Reginald Uren won an award with his design of this building, which was completed in 1935 and is now Grade II* listed. Maybe the interior offers some hidden treasures but the bleak and bland functionalism of the exterior is utterly soulless and unwelcoming. The casual stranger passing by would be forgiven for thinking there was a power station in the centre of Crouch End. Representative of 1930s British municipal architecture it might be, but meritworthy it is not. Give an eight year old a piece of paper, ask him or her to draw a town hall and they could come up with a similar design in two minutes flat. Unsurprisingly one of the plaques on the wall by the entrance records that the Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers awarded a Gold Medal to the building on its completion. The brickwork is very good... Now that the building is surplus to the London Borough of Haringey's requirements the renowned architectural practice of John McAslan Partners has very recently been appointed to mastermind the building's future. It will be interesting to see what they propose.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>These shops with three storey residential accommodation above are typical of the ones to be found lining Crouch End's main roads. I would guess that they date from the 1890s or 1900s. The road, Tottenham Lane, is also the A103, which must be one of the shortest A roads in the country, running as it does from Lower Holloway only as far as Hornsey.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>Built 1933-1935 by competition winning architect Reginald Uren, Hornsey Town Hall is heavily influenced by Hilversum Town Hall (architect W. Dudok). No longer used as a town hall since the creation of the London Borough of Haringey in 1965, the building's future is under review.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>Quite extraordinarily this is not a clock tower built to commemorate a jubilee of Queen Victoria, as almost all of this age are. Instead it was raised in 1895 by subscription in appreciation and recognition of the public services rendered by Henry Reader Williams to the district of Hornsey over a period of twenty five years. He was a local wine merchant and local councillor who led the campaign to preserve Highgate Wood against threatened development. He was born in London in 1822 and died in 1897 aged 75 so lived to see the clock tower built in his recognition. Not only that but the tower is also substantially higher and bulkier than many that were built to record Queen Victoria's jubilees. No doubt she would not have been amused.

Dist:0.5km north<br/>These finely proportioned attractive shops with accommodation above are typical of many of the buildings that line the main roads in Crouch End. This is a block of five with the furthest one in buff part of the set. The third floor dormer windows are of two designs. The road is the A103 Crouch End Hill.
