After several hundred metres of country road which has climbed steadily through woodland, from the A472 in Hafodyrynys, a gap in the trees reveals a pylon, and power lines crossing the road.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Just beyond the western edge of the small village of Hafodyrynys, a sign beside the A472 warns of an 8% (1 in 12.5) descent ahead, and advises the use of a low gear. Although the route is not so steep for the whole descent, the drop in elevation is about 90 metres between this point and the eastern edge of Crumlin, some 1400 metres distant.

Dist:0.3km<br/>The B4471 leaves Hafodyrynys and enters the village of Sofrydd. The white-on-blue name sign shows the Welsh form 'Swffryd' beneath the (slightly) Anglicised form 'Sofrydd', though the reason for the change from 'd' in Welsh to 'dd' in English is a mystery. The two spellings appear to be used in the village with about equal frequency.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Located on the north side of the A472. 'Gwesty' is Welsh for hotel or guest house, but there was no indication on the exterior, beyond the name, that the house is still used as a guest house, nor does it appear in an on-line directory of local businesses.

Dist:0.3km<br/>On the south side of the A472, a few metres from the long descent http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2017971 to Crumlin, a Caerphilly County Borough Council sign advises that the sale of vehicles is not permitted on roadside verges or anywhere on the highway. For reasons of road safety, cars displayed for sale here will be removed without notice.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This is a section of wall standing on its own in front of the Glyn. It is unclear whether it is a bit of old wall which has been retained when the A472 was improved, or whether it has been specially built. It's shape and good condition indicates that it might be the latter. It stands on its own on an area of well-kept grass.
