Dist:0.5km<br/>Podington airfield was originally built to accommodate two RAF bomber squadrons but was handed over to the US 8th Army Air Force in 1942. The 92nd Bomb Group arrived in September 1943 and the memorial tells the rest of the story. The airfield was sold off in 1961 and is now better known for its Santa Pod raceway. This memorial is located beside the Airfield Road which accesses the latter and led to the former airfield.

Dist:0.8km<br/>On the public footpath by Knapwell Farm behind the garden centre. There seemed to be plenty of ears of wheat on the ground, in the old days locals would come out gleaning and collect them.

Dist:0.8km<br/>The trees along the track seem to be about twenty years old. I noticed two types of oak, and ash. There are harvested wheat fields both sides of the track, which is a public footpath.

Dist:1.0km<br/>The House, not to be confused with the Hall, dates from the 18th Century. It is built with the typical golden sandstone of the region. It is now in the process of restoration.

Dist:1.0km<br/>This view of Hinwick House shows the south front viewed across its parkland from the hamlet of Hinwick. The House is Grade I listed and was built 1708-1714, with later additions, for Richard Orlebar.

Dist:1.1km north<br/>This is a large garden centre, with a cafe which provided a welcome tea and cake after I had walked around the fields. The path between the trolleys and the flowers is a public footpath which runs through the car park and out behind into the fields.

Dist:1.1km east<br/>There was maize for the pheasants in a nearby field. The wheat field has not been harvested yet.

Dist:1.1km southeast<br/>The Three Shires Way crosses the car park running north-east up to the white buildings in the background. The white buildings are part of the Santa Pod dragstrip, which uses the former runway.

Dist:1.1km north<br/>Although Podington is probably better known by its association with the Santa Pod drag racing circuit, the village itself is a jewel of vernacular architecture. It has been described as "an aged village of stone and thatch built around the 13th-Century Church of St Mary the Virgin" from where this photo was taken looking south and west.
