Generally they were used to humiliate the victim and people were only allowed to throw soft material. There's many a miscreant today who would benefit from a spell, but remember, soft material only.

Dist:0.7km<br/>The field is full of newly sprung wheat developing for next year's crop. Houses in the right mid-distance are on Horse Road, Hilperton Marsh. The Kennet and Avon Canal and partly visible Hilperton Marina are about half a mile beyond, and the northern part of Bradford on Avon is spread over the distant hill.

Dist:0.7km<br/>In this meadow it is just possible to see evidence of the medieval open field system. The field has mostly been used as pasture since the time of the enclosures, ploughing would have destroyed the ditches. Dist:0.7km<br/>Before the coming of the Hilperton bypass to the south this was the main east to west road through the village, the A361 passes between Trowbridge and Devizes. The roundabout at the eastern end of the bypass is a short way beyond the two cars.
