A very evocative image showing that spring has started but there is still a long way to go ... all set against a clear blue sky on a glorious spring day.

Dist:0.3km north<br/>This is the highest point of Hampstead Heath and indeed in London I believe although I have found no agreement on the actual height, estimates varying between 90 and 134 metres. The name is said to derive either from the notion of Guy Fawkes planning to watch the destruction of Parliament from here, or from the fact that the hill was a defensive position for Cromwell's troops during the civil war. Either way, it was formerly known as Traitor's Hill.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>This pond is the uppermost of the three Hampstead Ponds at the southern end of Hampstead Heath, created in the 18th century by damming Hampstead Brook, a tributary of the River Fleet,to supply London with water. Mixed bathing is allowed here during the summer months.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>Swimming is permitted in some of the ponds on Hampstead Heath. This is the Mixed Bathing Pond. Swimmers use the area beyond the white markers and anglers fish from the dam that separates this pond from the lower ones. My 5 year old asked why the swimmers couldn't swim at this end - the elderly angler replied that even if he could land one they wouldn't fit in his keep net!
