According to 'The History of Thornham' by Leon MacLeod, the original intention was for the line to go under the canal at Slattocks! 'Tar' Betty's lock house was around here somewhere but was demolished in 1912.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Tesco's former northwest chilled food distribution depot on the Stakehill Industrial Estate near Middleton. It used to operate 24 hours a day 7 days a week supplying fresh food to its stores in North Wales and the Northwest of England. All this came to an end in July 2010 when the depot closed down with all operations being transferred to a new Tesco distribution depot near Widnes operated by the Stobart Group.

Dist:0.4km<br/>In 1982 Sainsbury's opened their distribution depot on Stakehill Industrial Estate at Middleton north of Manchester. It supplied all the supermarkets in the north of England for 19 years until its closure in February 2001. The photograph was taken in January 2000 when a brand new fleet of 45 Scania trucks was introduced but within twelve months of this picture being taken the depot was to close with the loss of 300 jobs with all operations moving to Haydock.
