Wonderful brickwork preserved on this old building in the centre of Hertford.

Many people think this is the castle, but it is infact the Gatehouse to the castle. It was built in 1461-5 but was much altered in the 18th century. Between 1789 and 1792 the Earl of Hillsborough had a south wing added and the gateway changed into an entrance hall where a porch and door was added, as the picture shows. The Earl had married into the Cecil family who owned the castle. Apart from this Gatehouse, the only surviving parts of the castle are the motte and some of the flint curtain wall.

Built between 1769 to 71 the building was designed by James Adam (Robert's brother), and was restored in 1990. The ground floor houses The Magistrates Court

Dist:0.1km north<br/>The waterway system of Hertford is very complex, with at least four named rivers, and numerous side-streams. It will need another one or two visits before I understand it well, but for now - this weir carries water which has come from the upper (non-navigable) reaches of the River Lea.
