Dist:0.2km<br/>Dating from 1857 this tramway linked the Ailesbury Ironstone Mine to the calcining kilns alongside Scugdale Beck. From the kilns the reduced ore was transported to the ironworks in Stockton via a branch railway from the Cleveland and North Yorkshire Railway. The mine and kilns were abandoned on 2nd April 1887.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Dating from 1857 these kilns were used to roast the iron ore produced from the Ailesbury Mine further up the dale in order to remove impurities and reduce the bulk prior to transportation to the ironworks in Stockton. The kilns were served by a branch railway from the Cleveland and North Yorkshire Railway and were linked to the mine by a tramway. The mine and kilns were abandoned on 2nd April 1887. This particular shot shows some unusually angle stonework, the purpose of which is unknown.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Louie's Stone. Dedicated, according to a brass plaque on the stone wall, to Louie Swainson 1916-1998, naturalist and author of The History of Scugdale (1997). The dressed stones are clearly from the piers of a bridge over the beck which carried the branch railway from the ironstone calcining kilns at Scugdale to the iron works in Stockton and dates from 1857.

The picture was taken looking in a north-westerly direction towards Coalmire Lane.

Dist:0.5km<br/>Built on substantial stone piers the origin of which is a bit of a mystery. Possibly associated with the nineteenth century ironstone mining activity but this doesn't align with any known tramways.

The tramway followed the slight dip on the left, across the field and to the right of the cottages at Huthwaite Green. The mine was located in the woods behind the cottages.
