The southern fringe of the town was partly fields and partly clay pits, but is now covered with modern warehouses and factories. The A629 Elland bypass is in the foreground and Huddersfield road in the middle. At the top left a large area of quarries has been regraded, and there is an old brickworks chimney on the skyline.

Dist:0.1km<br/>This is at the junction of Ainley Bottom (the spine road of Ainleys Industrial Estate) with Huddersfield Road. The business mail box is sited here. Over the former main road the house on the right is shown on the 1907 map, but the other one is later.

Dist:0.1km<br/>Viewed from the steep hillside above the A629 Elland Bypass. The red houses are in the Rosemount Avenue estate and the pale ones in the more recent Caldercroft. In between is a field of rough pasture, traversed by an 'informal' footpath. How long before the field is built on?

Dist:0.2km<br/>The estate is just another business park. Rousemount Mills were known locally as Dempster's, a major employer in Elland. Edith May Dempster (1883 - 1942), the second daughter of Robert Dempster, the founder of the business, became on marriage Mrs Edith Pretty. In the late-1920s she and her husband moved to the Sutton Hoo Estate near Woodbridge, Suffolk. Excavations there in 1938/9 revealed the Sutton Hoo Ship Burial, where Saxon boats from the 6th & 7th centures had been dragged up the hillside from the River Deben to become (possibly) the final resting-place of Raedwald, King of East Anglia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sutton_Hoo

Dist:0.3km<br/>The sign says 'PTG Heavy Industries' and their website that "the Elland manufacturing facility (is) particularly suited for building and assembling large machine tools, being able to handle 60-ton component weights in a ‘single lift’." It has "one of the largest in-house slideway planning and grinding facilities in Europe 14.5m x 3.25M x 2.5M (47.57ft x 10.66ft x 8.20ft)...".
