Dist:0.3km<br/>Not much evidence of chalk on the metalled road, though there will certainly be plenty of the stuff just beneath. Presumably it was named before the invention of tarmacadam.

Dist:0.6km<br/>This was obviously quite a wind trap as all the autumn leaves had been swept into this corner by the stile, making a pile about a foot deep immediately adjacent to the stile.

Dist:0.6km<br/>Mobile homes seem to be getting bigger. This one has wheels, but was supported on about 20 jacks. It appeared to be a "show home".

Dist:0.6km<br/>In the south-western part of the square, a south-north footpath starts to descend through grazing land to Bighton Road (seen crossing the middle of the photograph). Beyond, a driveway leads to Grove Farm (middle distance) in a small valley surrounded on three sides by trees. Beyond that the hill rises in the far distance to trees which are at Hattingley, just outside the square.

Dist:0.8km<br/>Pasture land with a number of horse jumps in it, including this one using the natural lie of the land where the horse would be coming uphill from the right to make the jump.

Dist:1.0km<br/>Taken from the minor road to Broadlands, looking north. This shows grazing land in front, sloping down to West End Farm (named on 1:25K maps) at the eastern side of the square. The farm building is completely enclosed by scaffolding and topped with a tarpaulin. Clearly, major work going on here.

Dist:1.0km northeast<br/>From an east-west footpath south of Hattingley. This house has extensive views to the south, and also a dressage area.

Dist:1.0km north<br/>This fingerpost (posts?) is slightly more use than the photograph might suggest. It stands at the junction of Heath Green Lane and Ferney Lane, and the two paths lead off either side of the hedge in the picture.

Dist:1.1km southeast<br/>This field has been ploughed on different occasions, in different directions, and it shows. It is currently fallow to grass, the footpath running diagonally across from where the photographer is standing. It shows the dip in the middle of the field with a general slope down from left to right, represented by the U-shaped contour on the map. Along the hedge on the horizon runs Lower Paice Lane (named on 1:25K maps).

Dist:1.2km west<br/>Young beef cattle gathering at the field edge to look at a passing walker. It was fortunate that the footpath followed the edge of fields which were not occupied by these frisky and inquisitive beasts.
