Dist:0.1km north<br/>This is not marked on any of my OS maps, not even the 1850 6” map. It was probably erected by the turnpike trust, and is inscribed 'TO H' (for Halifax) on one face and 'TO W (?) M' on the other (W for Wakefield, M for miles). The distance is about 7 miles.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>Most bus services in and around Heckmondwyke were provided by the Yorkshire Woollen District company. When the West Yorkshire passenger Transport Executive wes formed, the YWD buses were absorbed into it. Most of the buses were repainted into the PTE's Verona green and cream livery, but a few, as here, retained the YWD red.

Dist:0.3km north<br/>Former premises of Thomas Carr Ltd, Carpet Yarn Spinners and Dyers. The company went into administration in January 2004 and the Mill closed. It has since suffered fire damage and is sadly set to be demolished to make way for yet another new (Barratt's) Housing Estate, especially since mills with multi-storey and single storey buildings and chimneys are becoming very rare.

Dist:0.3km north<br/>This fine old house is easy to miss when travelling on the A638 (High Street), as it has no windows on that side and instead faces a 20C estate road, Hill Top Estate. It was built in the early 18C, but still has the four to six light mullioned windows typical of the 17C. Note the cross on the top of the gable. The wall in front is quite new, built since it was photographed for the imagesof england.org.uk site in August 2004. The Upper Independent Chapel can be glimpsed in the background.
