Village lies approx. 3.5 miles north of Romford. It was the site of a Royal Palace from 11th to 17th century and Edward IV granted a royal charter in 1465 establishing the Liberty of Havering.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Looking East down Broxhill Road from the village centre produces this view of the prominent water tower. Built by the South East Essex Water Company in 1934 to help maintain water pressure to the town of Romford, some two miles distant. It is still owned by the water authority but believed to be not now required for its original purpose. With the sun shining on it, it can be seen from the top of the London Eye, seventeen miles away.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The stocks in Havering-ate-Bower clearly suffer from the same syndrome as the proverbial Robert The Bruce's axe (seven new heads & four new handles). They replaced and older set in 1829 I am very sceptical that the wood would be in such good condition if it had not been replaced some time in the past one hundred and eighty odd years. The railings have changed in the time of Geograph's existence [[25951]] see also [[2681480]]
