Havelock Road can be seen behind the bus, which is a 1980 Bristol VRT (registration no. BKE840T), working on Service 4 into Hastings. One of the odd things about the fleet at this time, was that the double deck buses had their fleet numbers in huge figures on the roof above the top deck front windows. A sister bus from the same batch can be seen working in Tunbridge Wells on the same day in this view:- [[1681022]]. The pub on the corner behind the bus was the Old Golden Cross. The building is still a pub, but now goes under the strange name of Heroes. Is this perhaps a tribute to King Harold's brave men, who fell in the Battle of Hastings in 1066, when William the Conqueror invaded? On the right corner can be seen a building, which was later to be demolished. Since the photograph was taken, there have been some road changes where this once stood.
