In normal times, the River Tees is culverted under the road at Lowend Bridge. But in times of flood, the water washes over the road without causing the sort of damage which might occur with a conventional bridge. The grey building in the background is the Methodist chapel, founded 1850.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The view from Knotted Scar. Harwood Beck is at the extreme bottom left of the picture. The reservoir almost appears to defy gravity up there. About 15 metres gain in height on the moorland to its east prevents the water from spilling towards us.
