Hartshead Moor Side Homepage


This is taken looking along Hartshead Lane towards the cross-roads with the B6119; School Lane (formerly called Cross Road) climbs the hill ahead. The building in the centre is the former post office, and it still has the carved stone pilasters and brackets from the shop front. Road the corner to the right a house is called the Old Co-op. These recall the prosperous days when there was a coal mine at Three Nuns and cottage industries of weaving and tanning. Now the village is populated by commuters. The village school is up School Lane on the left side of the photo.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Here the remains of hawthorn hedges mark the route of Parkin Hall Lane as shown on the 1850 6" map. The right-of-way (footpath) has been diverted to the right and meets Fall Lane at the foot of Prospect Road.

Dist:0.3km<br/>The Grey Ox Inn can just be seen amongst trees at the left, and a group of old house on the corner at the right where a hedged footpath goes down into the valley. Like many villages in the Kirklees District, Hartshead has many new houses fitted into the gaps between the old ones.

Dist:0.3km<br/>A splendid view down across arable farmland and woodland into the Calder valley. The dense woodland just in front of the tall white chimney and the red tower cranes is in Kirklees Park and lines the Wakefield Road. Robin Hood's Grave is situated in wood the close to the chimney. Dist:0.3km<br/>This is typical of the long narrow woods that often occur at the steepest part of a hillside just below a comparatively level 'shelf'. Seen looking eastwards from Cross Hill Lane.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Being called a 'lane' and enclosed by hedges suggests that this is a former pack-horse track, although now a public footpath. It must have been well-used by miners walking to work at the Three Nuns Colliery in the early 20C.

Dist:0.4km<br/>This is a deep holloway, formerly a lane from Hartshead village to Parkinhole but now just a footpath. There are the earthworks of an old demolished farm above the retaining wall on the right.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The part in the sun is the former Parkin Hall Lane. In 1850 there was a farm in the middle distance of the photo - now just bumps in the grass. Perhaps this was the original Parkinhole (Parkin Hall on the 1850 6" map), which is said to be an Anglian settlement, 'Paca's hollow'.
