Hartington cheese factory as viewed from the main pay and display car park. The factory opened in the 1870s and produces no less than a quarter of the world’s supply of Stilton. To be called Stilton, a cheese must be produced in the counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire or Nottinghamshire. Hartington cheese can be purchased from the factory shop opposite the duck pond [[90987]].

This factory once produced large quantities of cheeses, including Hartington Stilton, the famous blue cheese. Unfortunately the company was taken over by a rival, and the factory closed (some say with indecent haste) in 2009, and the machinery exported to Germany.
