Dist:0.5km<br/>An imposing frontage to a farmhouse at the southern edge of the tiny village of Hartforth, overlooking the shallow valley of Gilling Beck. The Gothick facade doesn't at first site look modern, but is in fact a very recent building, and winner of the 2009 award for &#8216;New building in a Georgian context&#8216;. The estate inherited by Sir Josslyn Gore-Booth Bt. having lost its original seat, now a hotel (Hartforth Hall), the original Home Farm was demolished and replaced by this design by Digby Harris of Francis Johnson and partners, which was a carefully considered response to the particular location and circumstances. The north-facing side of the building matches the Georgian farm buildings of the village whilst this facade was designed to make its own architectural statement when seen form the south in views in which both it and the original Hartforth Hall would be visible. The track from which the photo was taken is the northern end of Jagger Lane, which is a bridleway leading for five kilometres to the southeast, initially crossing Gilling Beck by a low two-arched bridge prominently signed as "unstable bridge, maximum load two tons"

Dist:0.5km<br/>A new build architecturally designed to blend in with the adjacent listed Georgian farm buildings, apparently. The architects were Francis Johnson and Partners and the design won a prestigious architectural award in 2009. Local opinion is somewhat divided. In the foreground a JCB is working on Hartforth Beck and producing much exhaust fumes.

Dist:0.8km<br/>A well signposted and apparently well used public footpath leads northwest from Gilling West to Hartforth, just off the line of Catchwater Stell, a small stream draining part of along the low-lying land on the northeast side of Gilling Beck. The next field boundary northwest of [[[1709143]]] is crossed by this stile (there is a gate further left, but using that would be very muddy, even under snow). On the snowy rise in the distance is the village of Hartforth.
