Dist:0.3km<br/>Another photo and good description here [[395332]] Dr Sharpe was vicar of Hartburn from 1749-92 and it was he who carved the grotto out of the sandstone cliff. The internal gothick arch which divides the larger outer chamber from the dark inner one reflects that in the footbridge at the southern end of the walk down to the grotto [[880708]]. This too, along with Tower House [[1752915]], were also built by Dr Sharpe. The two niches above the grotto entrance used to house statues of Adam and Eve. The tunnel is 15m long, roofed with large slabs (over which the path runs) but is now a crawl. Dist:0.3km<br/>Grotto or Folly said to be built by archdeacon Sharp in 1760, carved out of solid sandstone in the cliff face, it contains a large fireplace in one room and another smaller room. Above the main doorway are two niches with the statues missing, there is also an underground passage leading to the river’s edge.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Opposite the old school at Hartburn is the field which was the school playing field. I went to Hartburn School and the then headmaster used to tell an intriguing story regarding the field. He was a keen local historian and claimed that the field was the site of the ancient village of Hartburn. The large stone being the remains of the village cross and the various mounds were remains of dwellings.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The 'bakers chest' was, maybe still is the name given to this deep 'pool'. Local 'folklore' said that during the times border raids the village baker inserted a large metal ring into the bedrock under the surface of the water to which he tied his money chest in order to keep it safe from border raiders. Unfortunately for him the chest was lost during a severe river flood!!!
