Welwyn North station can be seen in the background.This is still a bottle neck on the East Coast railway and causes delay as either side of the tunnels and viaduct the line returns to four tracks.

Dist:0.8km west<br/>Despite Digswell being the nearest village the station was opened as Welwyn by the Great Northern Railway in 1850, only becoming Welwyn North when the station in Welwyn Garden City was opened in 1926. In the distance the railway disappears into the southern of the two Welwyn tunnels. The area on the left was once a goods yard but is now one of the station car parks.

Dist:0.8km west<br/>The upper windows are now boarded up but Welwyn North, once just Welwyn, is a rare surviving example of the former Great Northern Railway's style of station architecture, dating from 1850. It is a Grade II listed building. This is a view from the east side of the station and from Harmer Green Lane.

Dist:0.8km west<br/>The footbridge with its fine metal latticework is a Grade II listed structure, but the view of it is ruined by the addition of the metal security screen, the untidy stringing of a cable duct across it, and the modern lamps, not to mention the overhead track electrification cables strung underneath it. The whole structure, on this side at least, is painted in a uniform battleship grey. There is a dilemma here. Network Rail need to maintain a working environment that is safe for both railway passengers and staff and which is efficiently engineered whilst having a duty of care for the infrastructure of historical merit that they have inherited from the railway operating companies in the past. How do they achieve that? Discuss! The brick building on the right is the south end of the main 1850 built station, a front view of which is here [[1555927]].

Dist:1.0km west<br/>The viaduct was completed in 1850 by the Great Northern Railway to take its new line to the north from London over the valley of the River Mimram. A contemporary newspaper report on the opening of the railway from The Times described it as "...consisting of 42 arches each 30 feet wide and 97 feet high and built at a cost between £70,000 and £80,000. The masonry has all the appearance of great solidity..." As well it might as 159 years further on it still has all the appearance of great solidity! This is the view of 10 of the 42 arches taken looking along Hertford Road.
