Dist:0.2km<br/>This was likely the original 'Harlow Hill', a name now applied to the hamlet on the Military Road to the south. The structure on the left is probably an underground water reservoir constructed much more recently and without the protection of the old wartime buildings and bunker on the right which were part of a communications facility located on the hilltop above RAF Ouston. The OS map still shows an aerial here but it has now gone.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Old farm buildings at the west end of the village, on the Military Road (B6318), and Hadrian's Wall National Trail. Much of the hamlet of Harlow Hill, including the farm, is currently for sale by the Duke of Northumberland, and plans have been lodged for redevelopment.

Dist:0.3km<br/>A disused quarry north of Harlow Hill now used by Harlow Hill Gun Club for clay pigeon shooting. The ruined buildings on the hilltop above the quarry were part of a World War II wireless facility for RAF Ouston [[2799943]]. It was defended by a keyhole-shaped pillbox located on a promontory above the quarry face [[1185141]] (just visible with the trees of Crag Plantation behind) and other pillboxes in the surrounding area, including one at the foot of the quarry face [[2254207]]

Dist:0.3km<br/>An earthwork within the forest plantation adjacent to the quarry had been interpreted as a possible Roman settlement or camp but no evidence was found to support this by field investigation in 1972. Hadrian's Wall passes through Harlow Hill much further to the south and below the hilltop, and a milecastle situated there would have had views mainly directed to the south, west and east. http://www.pastscape.org.uk/hob.aspx?hob_id=20406

Dist:0.3km<br/>Erosion (or could we say mudification?) is a serious problem at many points along the very popular Hadrians Wall National Trail http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/hadrianswall/. Over many of the wettest sections, flagstones have been laid to assist walkers. Elsewhere, especially towards the eastern end of the Trail, where the Trail runs in a narrow strip fenced off from the adjacent fields, PVC "honeycombs" have been laid down. In this image, honeycombs have been stored by the side of the Trail preparatory to laying them on the path. This view is looking eastwards towards Harlow Hill; to the right of the hedge is the post-Roman Military Road B6318.
