Dist:0.3km<br/>This view looking north-west taken from the footbridge in Harbottle shows the River Coquet, pronounced Coe-kit, flowing towards the camera. The source of the river is in the Cheviot Hills exactly on the border between England and Scotland near the Roman Camps of Chew Green. From Harbottle the river flows east through Rothbury, the 'capital of Coquetdale', and enters the North Sea at Amble, a total length of 40 miles. The river is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its entire length.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This is the metal footbridge over the River Coquet about 250m from the village of Harbottle which is in the direction of the camera. The bridge stands alongside a ford across the river, see [[456177]], which is rough and deep, hence the need for a footbridge, and there is likely to have been a bridge here of one form or another going back many years.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This ford lies on an unclassified road that comes from the village of Harbottle about 250m away on the other bank and then goes towards Biddlestone. It is unlikely that ordinary vehicles use this ford; it is not signposted, it is rough and deep, and visitors to the farms further along this road have to go via Sharperton 3km to the east. However recent tracks in the silt either side of the ford suggest that it is no barrier to tractors. The placename Harbottle means the 'dwelling of the hirelings'.
