Questions have been raised as to the church's future safety, given the erosion rates in the area (see e.g. TG3830). The lighthouse in the background is also in TG3830.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Water can be seen running down the cliff face in a small stream coming from the landward side and spilling onto the beach. Over time little steps have formed in the dark layer of clay which forms the cliff base. Wave action is undermining the cliff face from the seaward side also, from where the sea is eating away at the cliff base - crumbling and eventually toppling onto the beach. The layers above are slipping downwards, taking all vegetation with them. The exposed cliff face is easy prey for wind and weather. All that remains of the revetments along this section of coastline is a skeleton of bare posts with nothing much in between > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1034436. Coastal erosion in the vicinity has been estimated at an approximate rate of one metre/year, which accounts for the loss of a strip of land approximately two kilometres wide since the Roman invasion in 43 CE, resulting in the disappearance into the sea of several medieval villages.

Dist:0.6km<br/>The tower and porch of the church. In the niche above the outer doorway of the porch is a figure of Our Lady - the Patron Saint. This figure is modern and was the gift of the late Dr C H Page to replace a former statue (believed to have been the original 15th century one) damaged during the war. The Tower of St Marys Church is 110ft high from the ground and 180ft above sea level.
