<br/>The style of architecture would not be out of place as part of a stately home. This building would originally have housed steam engines for pumping. As far as I am aware, there are now no steam engines on site, but the buildings remain in use to house more modern equipment.

<br/>You could be forgiven for thinking so, but this is simply part of the Hampton waterworks built by the Metropolitan Water Board in the 19th century to supply water to the expanding city of London.

The machine closest to us consists of (from right to left) - A W H Allen tandem compound impulse steam turbine with single flow LP, a reduction gear box, a single stage centrifugal pump, a double stage centrifugal pump and a generator (DC I seem to recall). In the right background is part of a single casing turbine driving pumps only (no generator). Returning to the nearest machine, the plume of gland steam indicates that this is a runner (also the position of the tacho needle)..

Dist:0.1km north<br/>The last steam powered pumping station in the country - closing c1984. Eight sets of steam turbines driving a mixture of centrifugal pumps and generators. Water tube boilers and a range of auxiliaries. When seen it was being electrified.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>Just part of this huge machinery hall. Nearest are two modern electric pumps that have replaced a turbine set. Beyond those are two steam turbine sets driving centrifugal pumps and generators. I spent several hours here and visited just about every part of this building.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>Part of the extensive installations built by the Metropolitan Water Board to satisfy the increasing demand of 19th century London, these works are still very much in use, operated by Thames Water. The old buildings now house much more modern equipment than that originally installed.

Dist:0.5km north<br/>Looking south east down Station Road towards the Red Lion pub, with the then ubiquitous tacky plastic red barrel above its sign. The High Street crosses the end of this road at a slight angle.
