Dist:0.1km<br/>This pub once served the vast Stanton Ironworks site which surrounds it and its clientele would have come from the large - and no doubt very thirsty - workforce. Although parts of the old site are still in use for industrial purposes, the pub might easily have followed many of the buildings here into abandonment and dereliction. However, it seems to have reinvented itself with attractions for families and a restaurant area with a thriving Sunday lunchtime trade. It is seen here on a miserably wet Sunday.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Stanton Ironworks has a long history becoming Stanton & Staveley and then part of British Steel before being acquired by the French company St Gobain. They were major employers for people from all the surrounding towns and villages and their site covered a large area. Since the demise of "Stanton" in the latter half of the last century, many of the old buildings have been demolished and some have been replaced by new ones. St Gobain still has a presence on the site but many of the remaining buildings are now occupied by smaller private companies engaged in light engineering and the like. One constant throughout all this change has been the Seven Oaks pub (on the right of the picture) but even this has undergone major refurbishment and is now also a restaurant no less!

Dist:0.6km<br/>Looking south-east from the 'plateau' formed by the railway sidings and ironworks factories, which closed in 2007. This vast site was part of British Steel and employed thousands of people over its long history. http://www.stantonironworks.co.uk/main_stanton_dir/history.html In the background is the M1, which crosses the river, railway and canal in short succession. There is obviously a hold-up as the southbound carriageway is almost stationary.

Dist:0.6km<br/>Stoney Clouds is a sandstone outcrop that provides excellent views of the surrounding area. Its name is derived from the Saxon word for hill - 'clud'. The Erewash Valley Golf Club can be seen on the other side of the M1.
