This car park was the original site of Halifax North bridge station, The line was built by the Great Northern Railway in 1880, It closed to passengers trains in 1955. The goods yard remained in operation until 1974. This section of line between Holmfield and Queensbury involved some serious excavation work. Strines cutting and Queensbury tunnel take up most of the 2 1/4 mile stretch. Water made the work difficult, to this day the southern end of Queensbury tunnel is completely flooded. Goods traffic began rolling on 14th October 1878. Queensbury station was opened on Easter Saturday 1879, North Bridge opened on 25th March 1880. After a bit of local pressure an additional station at Ovenden was opened in June 1881. This view is from Beacon Hill. Two of the three bridges can be seen in the centre - the North Bridge and the modern viaduct carrying the Halifax bypass. The oldest bridge is down in the valley out of sight. In front is a former industrial area that has been redeveloped as a retail park.

This view is from Beacon Hill. Partly duplicating another photo, but showing the parish church as well as the other named buildings. Although the 18C Square Chapel is square, it was built in a district called Square. It was saved from dereliction and probable demolition by volunteers who have established it as a thriving arts centre. It was replaced in the 19C by the neo-Gothic chapel to the right, of which little but the tower and spire survive. Behind it is the Piece Hall, built round a courtyard in the 18C when Halifax was an important market centre for the wool and cloth trade. The Parish Church is very ancient, and the parish originally included the whole of upper Calderdale, a similar area to the present Metropolitan Borough. In front are some staithes, where materials such as coal were tipped from railway wagons into carts below.

You can find this print, in the stairwell beside the West Entrance to the Piece Hall. Legend says it's the hand print of a murderer but more likely just a builder's print.

Dist:0.1km north<br/>I do not pretend to understand this but Halifax, like every other town having concerns about its pigeon population and the resulting mess and risk to health, has actually set apart a pigeon feeding area encouraging them to congregate near the entrance to the bus station. Cut out on the right of the picture is a notice explaining the theory behind this. In the course of two or three hours I did not see a single pigeon in Halifax so maybe they're as confused as I am about all this.
