Both name of pub and hamlet indicate the site of a former Wealden foundry in the vicinity.

The inn dates back to the 15th century and once served the workers of the nearby Wealden iron foundries some of whom produced cannon, hence the name. The inn itself gave its name to the small hamlet that grew up around it and was for a time used as a local courthouse by the travelling magistrates. Still a popular country pub today.

The thatched cottage dates back to the 16th century. Both lane and hamlet are called Gun Hill named after the nearby inn which it grew around which itself was named after the local Wealden iron foundries which made cannon.
