This former churchyard was turned into a garden in 1994. It is between Henrietta Mews and Heathcote Street. It is dominated by London Plane trees (on the far left). In the background is an apartment block on Heathcote Street.

The monument is a reminder of the gardens' previous role, between 1713 and 1855, as a burial ground, before they became a public park in Victorian times. A school and terrace of houses at the eastern end were destroyed in the blitz, replaced by the modern buildings seen here.

This was one of the first burial grounds located away from a church; it was originally established in 1713 to serve two parishes: St George the Martyr, Queen Square and St George, Bloomsbury. It was closed in 1855 but later reopened as a public park, retaining the mature London plane trees and larger monuments.

Now a pleasant park, this was one of the first burial grounds to be established away from a church. It served the churches of St George the Martyr, Queen Square, and St George, Bloomsbury.
