Dist:0.2km north<br/>The pub on the corner of Mansfield Road and Oak Village is named for the oak tree under which parishioners gathered to hear an annual gospel reading, before the area began to be developed in the mid-C19. Presumably there was an earlier pub - this one looks mid-C20. Many old oaks were called Gospel Oaks, from the gospels that were preached from beneath their shade or shelter: a continuation of a pre-christian practice that can be traced back to the earliest times. Gospel oaks also acted as a boundary markers with clergy giving biblical readings as part of the traditional annual ceremony of the Beating of the Bounds..

Dist:0.2km north<br/>Built c 1780 this is one of the few intact surviving Georgian streets in London. There are just eight Grade II listed houses on this side and two on the other. However, quite unbelievably, the historic fabric of this narrow street and its houses is being threatened by the prospect of its use as the sole means of vehicle access for the construction of a residential development on the Ingestre Road housing estate to the east. Dist:0.2km north<br/>The suburban 'overground' railway line divides at Gospel Oak, one line going south to Dalston and Stratford, the other east to Barking. They cross Gordon House Road right beside the station. The twin bridges feature on the cover of Sinead O'Connor's 1997 EP Gospel Oak.

Dist:0.3km north<br/>On 11 November, 2007, Transport for London began to take over operation of several suburban rail services around the periphery of central London, turning them into a unified North London Railway, aimed ultimately at faciliating transport for the Olympics. This train is seen in its brand new livery at Gospel Oak station, until a few days earlier part of the Silverlink line.

Fittingly for an electric multiple unit, 313116 carries the name Nikola Tesla - pioneering scientist credited as inventor of the ac electric motor. On the right, a class 150 DMU waits in the Barking platform. Behind the arriving unit are the green spaces of Parliament Hill.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>The three Edwardian apartment blocks that comprise Lissenden Gardens celebrated their centenary in 2006. Exemplary of modern town planning, they aimed to attract the middle-classes to what was then an unpopular area, by offering state-of-the art buildings and unusual architectural features which drew on the ideas of William Morris. The residents have included many notable people: the blue plaque seen here commemorates the historian R.H.Tawney, while directly above there is another for the composer Haydn Wood.
