Birch bark has been used since very early times as a form of parchment in Northern Europe and in North America. Surviving birch bark documents found in the excavations of ancient Novgorod, for example, have given archaeologists a very full picture of what life was like there in mediaeval times. It once formed the grounds of a big house and although it adjoins the western section of Hampstead Heath it does not share its wildness, nor is it open all hours.
