Dist:0.1km north<br/>This is all that remains of the halt at Glogue. It appears to have been incorporated into a private garden but the old platform is clearly visible. The Whitland & Taf Vale Railway was incorporated on 1 July 1869 to extend its line to Crymych. The Engineer was James Weekes Szlumper of Aberystwyth. The line opened to Glogue on 24 March 1873 and to Crymych in October 1874; in both cases for freight. Passenger services had to wait until 12 July 1875. The line was closed in 1962.

Dist:0.1km north<br/>The road crossed the railway line just before the bridge; the old crossing gate is still here 45 years after the line closed. In this view the quarry can be seen to the north: the purpose of the railway was initially to transport slate.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>The bridge crosses the Taf: the quarry is on this (northern) side of the valley, the hamlet on the southern bank, as was the railway line which crossed the road between the bridge and this house.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>The hamlet consists of little more than this row of quarryworkers' houses overlooking the dismantled railway, the river and the quarry workings on valleyside beyond. Apart from scattered farms and cottages, the centre of the community is the nearby village of Hermon.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>Looking east along the floor of the quarry - there were in fact two quarries but they appear to have merged. The weighbridge is probably for use by lorries taking out stone and rubble from the spoil heaps.

Dist:0.5km north<br/>Slate extraction probably started here in a small way at the end of the C18 but output only picked up in the 1820s and 30s. It grew substantially during the second half of the C19, peaking in 1873 when 80 men were employed, producing 2000 tons of slate a year. It was also in 1873 that the railway finally opened, with the purpose of easing the transport out. Production slowed down in the C20 and the quarry was worked by a local syndicate until it closed in 1926.

Dist:0.6km west<br/>A variety of different techniques and materials have been used to patch up or extend the old buildings here. The farm stands on an eminence between Hermon and the Taf valley.

Dist:0.7km west<br/>Young cattle, looking at me looking at them, but the view beyond takes in the old slate quarry at Glogue and further east, barely visible directly above the red cow's rump and just below the horizon, the roof of the chapel of Llwynyrhwrdd near Tegryn [[516143]].

Dist:0.7km north<br/>The valley is heavily wooded at this point and the Taf is still a narrow stream. The sheltered fields on the slopes provide good grazing and a peaceful, timeless scene in high summer.

Dist:0.7km west<br/>Old farm buildings have seen better days at Nant-y-geifr fawr. The name means stream of the big goat (or maybe it was the farm that was big).

Dist:0.7km north<br/>The route crosses a nameless stream which joins the Afon Taf a little way to the right. Old tracks and lanes thread through the wooded valley which was once a busier place when local quarries provided employment for local people.

Dist:0.7km south<br/>Since the first Geograph image was taken in June 2007 [[473207]] restoration work has started on the chapel. Hermon was the Biblical name for a high place, near to God. The village that takes its name from it began as a few houses around the chapel and spread west and northwest along the road over the course of the past 200 years.

Dist:0.7km south<br/>The plaque over the door reads "Built 1808, enlarged 1835, rebuilt 1863, ardnewyddwd 1952". (Note the Welsh Language Society influence.) They seem to have a problem with rust in the reinforcment. The baptismal tank is in the foreground.

Dist:0.9km west<br/>Looking back in the direction of the village, south. The lane, which leads on down into the Taf valley to the north, fords a stream by this house which is called Bwlch-y-dwr/pass over the water.
