Village now absorbed into Edinburgh. Gilmerton was a mining village (coal and limestone), and there are still occasional problems with subsidence. The centre has some fine old houses.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Gilmerton was an old coalmining village lying four miles from Edinburgh before the urban sprawl reached it in the 1930s. These appear to be upgraded miners' cottages from the time when the inhabitants led a semi-rural existence away from the hubbub of the city.
