Dist:0.5km<br/>Many of the gravestones within the churchyard are covered in lichen. Lichens do not have roots, but absorb water and gases through their upper surface, and are therefore sensitive to atmospheric pollution. For this reason they are rarely found around cities and grow best on the wetter west side of the British Isles. Those on trees thrive best on the sunny, south-west aspects of trunks and branches. Disappearance of lichen species can be used to detect rising levels of air pollution. There are three main types. The encrusting forms, including the bright orange/dark yellow 'Xanthoria' grow on roofs, walls, gravestones, signs and tree trunks. Leaf-like species develop flat lobes spreading over bark or stones, and shrubby forms which grow vertically from the ground or hang from trees. Few have common names.

Dist:0.6km<br/>In the foreground is pasture (cattle were congregated to my left) whereas across the valley are arable fields. The crop there had a very yellowy appearance which I can't explain. The low sun also shows up a crater. Maps don't give an explanation for that - it may be a old chalk-pit or possibly a bomb crater. There is a frosty strip alongside the A4.

Dist:0.6km<br/>The purpose of the hospital is a little ambiguous from the wording on this plaque but it appears to mean that it was for the widows of both clergymen and laymen.

Dist:0.6km<br/>The building straddles two squares but most of it is in this one. It dates to 1694 in the reign of King William III. Two years later the infamous 'window tax' was introduced, the effect of which can be seen in the facade of this building. Dist:0.7km<br/>These historic almshouses were first founded circa 1695, under the Will of Sarah, Duchess of Somerset, an important social benefactress, who wanted to build a set of houses and a chapel for widows from Wiltshire, Somerset and Berkshire. Over the course of time, this group of houses came to be called 'the collegiate' and is now referrred to by residents as 'The College'.Today, they are modernised and maintained to a good standard.
