Hackney Theological Seminary (later College) was founded in 1803 in Hoxton and moved in 1887 to this purpose-built brick building with majolica dressings. It was a non-conformist institution co-founded by George Collison, confusingly calling itself Hackney College even when it moved here. It was concerned with the training of ministers for the congregational church, one of which was built beside it 1894. Later it became part of the New College London and now houses the European School of Management.

Dist:0.1km<br/>Three-storey house, with basement, built in the early years of the C20 for prosperous middleclass families such as my mother's whose childhood home it was, along with her 8 siblings, parents, a cook and a couple of servants, as was normal at the time. It had a large garden at the back then but otherwise appears unchanged apart from the wall in front. It is now divided into student accommodation.

Dist:0.1km<br/>In this view across the green, with a sprinkling of snow, the shops on Fortune Green Road can be seen through the bare branches of the trees. This is a comfortable, middle-class residential district and the grassy area is well-used to exercise dogs. A toddlers' playground is situated behind the photographer's position.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Immediately to the left, the footpath emerges from Hampstead Cemetery which swallowed up most of Fortune Green in 1876, leaving only this small triangle, surrounded by residential streets and, directly ahead, a row of shops.

Dist:0.2km<br/>This massive building, on the corner of Burrard Road, was built in 1894 as a Congregational church connected with the former Hackney Theological Seminary (later College) next door. It seated over a thousand but congregations dwindled and it closed in 1940. In 1947 it became the Shomei Hadath synagogue but now seems to have been converted into flats and offices.
